Unveiling the past: marine bioinvasions through time

Part 1 of 3

Embarking on a journey to understand the historical dynamics of marine invasive species, the TEMPOINVASIONS team, co-led by Sandra Nogué and Marc Rius, has been diligently collecting sediment cores from various coastal regions in Spain. By analysing these samples using palaeoecological techniques, we aim to reconstruct the timeline of marine biological invasions over the past two centuries.

Our recent field expeditions took us to the northern coast of Spain, specifically Santoña, where we collected cores from three distinct points in the bay. These samples are now being meticulously processed in our clean DNA laboratory to prevent any contamination, ensuring the accuracy of our ancient DNA analyses.

Stay tuned as we delve deeper into these samples to uncover the secrets they hold about past marine ecosystems and the species that have traversed them.
